Managing Suicidality at Different Risk Levels

June 10 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Presenter: Caitlin Burgess, MA, LPC

This presentation aims to create shared language around different levels of suicide risk as well as identify limitations to traditional screening and assessment tools. Attendees will learn the difference between a crisis safety plan and a comprehensive safety plan, the latter of which aims to improve a client’s quality of life and reduce well-known risk factors for suicide. This presentation will also equip attendees with the skills to have a conversation with clients and their support systems about lethal means safety.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to define a level one, two, or three risk level for suicide as well as the limitations to assessing clients for suicide with standardized tools.
  • Attendees will be able to distinguish between a crisis safety plan and a comprehensive safety plan, and the components needed to complete each type of safety plan.
  • Attendees will learn tangible skills for having a lethal means conversation with clients as well as different levels of lethal means safety that appropriately fit the client’s level of risk
  • Attendees will learn how to administer Pearson’s Quality of Life Inventory to use in tandem with creating therapeutic goals and building a comprehensive safety plan
